Why Hiring a Wedding Photographer Who’s Great With Kids Changes Everything — A Kathy & Mike Wedding

BACK TO ALL POSTS

Planning a family wedding in Red Deer or Central Alberta with kids involved? Here's why your wedding photographer's ability to work with children matters more than you think — and what to look for.

Why Your Wedding Photographer Needs to Be Great With Kids

When Kathy and Mike said yes to each other, they weren’t just building a marriage — they were building a family. Their daughter McKenzie was right there with them on their wedding day, part of every moment, every laugh, every tear. And that changed everything about how their day needed to be photographed.

Family weddings — the ones where kids are included, where little ones walk down the aisle and sit in the front row and twirl on the dance floor — are some of the most beautiful weddings I photograph. They’re also some of the most nuanced. Because children aren’t just small adults in fancy clothes. They have big emotions, real needs, and absolutely zero interest in standing still for twenty minutes while we get the perfect shot.

If you’re planning a wedding in Red Deer, Central Alberta, or anywhere across the prairies — and your kids are part of it — here’s what I want you to know about finding the right photographer for your day.

Kids Have Big Feelings — And That’s Not a Problem to Manage

Wedding days are emotionally intense for grown adults who understand what’s happening. For kids, that intensity gets multiplied. They can feel the excitement in the room. They can sense when the adults around them are nervous. They want to be close to their parents, and sometimes the formality of a wedding day pulls those parents away at exactly the moments a child needs them most.

A photographer who understands this doesn’t try to override it. They work with it. They know that a meltdown before portraits isn’t a disaster — it’s a signal that someone little needs five quiet minutes and maybe a snack. They know how to slow down without making the whole timeline fall apart.

On Kathy and Mike’s wedding day, McKenzie was in the thick of all of it — getting ready alongside her mom, standing up front during the ceremony, present in every family photo. And yes, there were moments that needed a softer pace. That’s not something I document from a distance. I step in. I redirect. I make it feel easy so you can stay present in your day.

“The best family wedding photos aren’t the ones where everyone is perfectly posed. They’re the ones where everyone — including the kids — actually felt comfortable enough to be themselves.”

The Snack Bag, the Quiet Corner, and Other Things Your Photographer Should Be Thinking About

I show up to every wedding with snacks. Not for me — for the kids. A cracker at the right moment has saved more family portrait sessions than any posing technique I know.

But beyond the practical stuff, what matters most is that your photographer is paying attention. They notice when a child has hit their limit. They know when to pull back and give a family five minutes to breathe instead of pushing through to get one more shot. They understand that a tired, overwhelmed kid isn’t going to give you the photos you want — and that a few minutes of genuine comfort will produce better images than any amount of posing.

This is something I take seriously. When kids feel seen and cared for, they relax. When they relax, they become their most natural selves. And that’s exactly where the best photos live.

What to Look For When Hiring a Wedding Photographer for a Family Wedding

If your children are going to be part of your wedding day, here’s what I’d encourage you to ask any photographer you’re considering:

Do you have experience photographing weddings with children involved?
Look for photographers who mention kids naturally — not as a complication, but as part of the story.

How do you handle it when a child needs a break during portraits?
A confident answer here tells you a lot. You want someone who has a plan and doesn’t panic.

Can I see a full gallery from a family wedding you’ve photographed?
Not just the highlights. A full gallery shows you how they handle the real moments — the in-between ones, the tired ones, the ones that make it all worth it.

Do they seem genuinely warm?
Kids read energy immediately. If your photographer is rigid or impatient, children will feel it. You want someone who actually likes kids — not just tolerates them.

Kathy & Mike’s Day — Golden Skies and a Little Girl Who Stole Every Frame

Their wedding had everything I love about prairie weddings — the kind of light that turns everything warm and golden, wide open skies, the easy intimacy of people who know each other well gathered together in a beautiful old barn.

And then there was McKenzie, who had opinions about everything and brought so much life to every single frame. Some of my favourite images from their day aren’t the traditional portraits — they’re the quiet in-between moments. McKenzie tucked into her mom’s side. The three of them laughing at something nobody else heard. A little hand reaching up to hold a bigger one.

That’s what a family wedding looks like when it’s photographed with care. Not perfect. Real.

If you’re planning a wedding in Red Deer, Central Alberta, or beyond — and your kids are going to be front and centre — I’d love to be your photographer. I’ve been doing this long enough to know that the most meaningful wedding days are the ones where every single person in the room feels seen. Even the little ones. Especially the little ones.
